Windows 10 Support Ending Next Month! Here’s What It Means For You

September 01, 2025

Attention: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. While your PC will continue to operate after this date, Microsoft will cease providing essential services like security patches and technical assistance that keep your system secure and running smoothly.

Why Should Business Owners Care?

  • Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your systems become increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks, malware, and viruses, putting your critical business data at serious risk. Upgrading to a newer Windows version is vital to protect your assets.
  • Software Compatibility Challenges: Many applications are optimized for the latest operating systems. Post-Windows 10 support, some programs may malfunction or stop working entirely, disrupting your business operations.
  • Regulatory Compliance Risks: If your business handles sensitive data or adheres to strict industry regulations, running outdated software could lead to non-compliance, resulting in fines or legal complications. Staying updated is essential to avoid these pitfalls.

What Are Your Next Steps?

Microsoft recommends upgrading to the latest Windows version before support ends. However, not all Windows 10 PCs meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11, and attempting an upgrade on incompatible devices will trigger error messages.

If your PC isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these options:

  • Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
  • Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) for continued protection
  • Transition to a Linux operating system
  • Ignore the deadline and risk your business security (not recommended!)

Before proceeding with any changes, always back up your important data to prevent loss during upgrades.

Understanding Extended Security Updates (ESU)

If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, Microsoft offers ESU for Windows 10, providing critical security updates for up to one year beyond the end-of-life date. Keep in mind, this is a temporary fix, not a long-term solution.

To access ESU, you can pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. Alternatively, a free option is available by enabling Windows Backup to sync your settings and files to OneDrive. Note that OneDrive offers 5 GB of free storage, and additional space may be required for large backups.

Don't delay—register for ESU before the October 14 deadline to maintain security coverage.
